Aggreko Plc, the global rental specialist, has secured several major contracts to provide temporary electrical power in Ghana.
With an impressive track record and over 30 years experience, Aggreko is the acknowledged specialist in designing and running temporary power stations around the world.
In 1997, the Company provided over 90MW into the national grid of Sri Lanka. During the first quarter of 1998, 35MW was provided to a regional electricity company in the UK following a transformer failure; and over 20MW tot he central business district of Auckland, New Zealand, following a major power failure.
The Ghana projects include:
- a 30MW temporary power plant located at Tema feeding into the national grid;
- 8MW of power generation equipment on rent to Abosso Goldfields Ltd, a subsidiary of Rangers Minerals NL of Australia
- 4MW of pwer generation equipment on rent to Teberebie Goldfields Ltd, a subsidiary of Pioneer Group Inc of the USA;
- two temporary power installations of 5 MW each supplied to the Norwegian company Scancem International to provide electricity to their cement works at Tema and Takoradi.
The low level of water in the Akosombo Dam, which supplies hydro-electric power to Ghana and its neighbouring countries, has resulted in extensive power cuts. The need for temporary power plants is expected to continue throughout the year until seasonal rains replenish the reservoirs.
