Cape Coast, April 21, GNA- The upgrading of roads in the Agona Swedru Municipality has not been abandoned by the contractor as being rumoured, Mr Kofi Boama Djan, Central Regional Director of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) has stated.

He said the 1.9 kilometres of roads currently under construction estimated at GH¢518,292 would be completed before the end of this year.

Mr Djan was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Cape Coast at the Weekend, in reaction to concerns raised by some residents of the municipality that the contractor had abandoned the work started last year.

He said the construction of culverts and drains had been completed, adding that, what was left was earthwork, sub-based and ceiling, which would be completed when the contractor returned to the site. Mr Djan stated that the physical job executed was 30 percent and a certificate had been issued for the payment of the work done, adding that, as soon as funds were made available the roads would be completed. The Regional Director of GHA assured the chiefs and the people of Agona Swedru that the job would be completed within the stipulated contract period.

Mr Djan said the second phase of the work would be awarded on contract before the middle of the year. According to the Regional Director, Nana Ato Arthur, Central Regional Minister and the Deputy Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai, who is also the MP for Agona West, were instrumental in the rehabilitation of the roads. He described Swedru as one of the busy towns in the Central region and expressed the hope that the roads would soon be completed, to give the area a face-lift to boost economic activities in the Municipality.
