Aids workshop for youth leaders ends

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), 12 Dec 1998 The Dormaa district recorded cases of 748 HIV positive between 1995 and October this year.

Mr. Samuel Ansu, the coordinator in-charge of the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital Primary health-care unit, made this known at a workshop on the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome at Dormaa-Ahenkro yesterday.

The workshop, organised by the District Aids Committee for 30 Church youth leaders, aimed at educating them on the dangers of AIDS.

Mr. Ansu called for sustained educational campaigns to check the disease that is fast spreading in the district.

Symptoms of the disease include prolonged fever, rashes, loss of weight among other factors; he said and stressed the need for the people to control their sexual habits.

Mr. John Amorle Botsio, District Social Welfare Officer and a member of the committee, said the disease is prevalent among the energetic youth expected to contribute to national economic development.

He therefore called on Churches and non-governmental organisations (NGO'S) to assist in creating the necessary awareness of the disease particularly among the youth.

Mr. Sam Sarpong Appiah, the general manager of the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital, who presided, assured the AIDS committee of the Church's support in the task of educating the people on the dangers of AIDS.
