Akomea Questions: What if all public institutions introduce road tolls?

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomea has questioned the purpose behind the University of Ghana’s collection of road tolls from motorists who ply their roads.

According to him, if the authorities are not called to order to reverse their decision, other public institutions are likely to replicate their action. This he said will create much inconvenience to the general public.

“If we don’t put things in order, all public institutions will start collecting road tolls from drivers. All the ministries will be forced to do that including embassies. This should not be a precedent for others to emulate,” he said.

Authorities of the University of Ghana on Saturday (February 1, 2014) started road toll collection at various entry points at the Legon campus.

The rates according to the school authorities range from Ghc1 to Ghc10. Lectures will have a sticker for a car whiles senior lecturers will be giving two stickers.

According to the authorities, their reason for collecting tolls is to pay back loans they took from banks to re-construct the roads on the school campus.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Nana Akomea said “If government had constructed the road for them all this wouldn’t have happened”.

He, however sees no reason why students must be imposed to pay the road tolls.

“This is unbelievable...I just don’t understand this,” he opined.
