June 1:- The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo has assured the Ghanaian community in Canada that Ghana is moving forward, leaving well behind the days when arbitrary rule was the order of the day. Nana Akufo-Addo said this when he addressed over five hundred Ghanaians at a dinner in his honour in Toronto last Friday.
Nana Akufo-Addo is on a tour of Canada and the United States of America at the invitation of the Canada and America branches of the NPP.
“Today the NPP has succeeded in building a humane and just society where respect for human rights and the rule of law is the order of the day”, he said to thunderous applause from the packed to capacity hall at the Days Hotel.
“We want you to support us to build upon this legacy where the pillars of equitable and just society have been constructed”, he said. “We shall no longer return to the days when hard working women of Ghana were caned and where young people were given identification hair cuts”, he added.
The Presidential Candidate of the NPP said he is committed to reforming the tax system when he becomes President, to make it easier for Ghanaians in the Diaspora to return home and contribute to the development of the country. He told his audience to show a keen interest in happenings in Ghana since they are directly affected by what happens back home.
“If Ghana is a prosperous and respected nation that image rubs off its citizens no matter where they live”, he said. “People are going to give you respect and honour if your country is viewed as deserving of honour”, he added.
Tickets for the dinner were sold out days before Nana Akufo-Addo and his team arrived in Toronto. There were over one hundred people at the gate at the time the dinner was underway who could not get tickets.
