The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Thursday, January 15, expressed his deepest condolences to the affected families of the January 2, 2015 Kuku-Hill fire disaster which resulted in the death of two children.

Speaking in Ga, Nana Akufo-Addo described the incident as a “sad and deeply unfortunate one”, explaining that though he was out of Ghana when the accident occurred, he decided to visit the family as soon as possible upon his return.

Accompanied by General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, National Youth Organiser, Sammy Awuku, 1st Greater Accra Regional Vice Chairman, Alfred Boye, Deputy Director of Communications, Perry Okudzeto, Nana Akufo-Addo visited the site of the disaster to assess the extent of damage.

The NPP flagbearer urged the family to remain strong in these difficult times and ensure that their faith in God was unshaken.

It will be recalled that on Friday, January 2, 2015, a six-year-old girl was burnt to death, when fire gutted a two-storey building at Kuku Hill, Osu in Accra. A nine-month-old baby who sustained severe injuries in the blaze, died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the same day. Two siblings of the deceased, Victoria Naa Oyo Aryee, 8, and Miriam Aryee, 4, however, left the room before the roof of the building caved in.

Nana Akufo-Addo made a cash donation of GH¢1,000.00 towards the funeral and assured the family that the NPP would be represented at the funeral service for the deceased, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 17, 2015.

At Osu-Doku, still in the Klottey Korle constituency, the NPP flagbearer and his team called on Madam Beatrice Akworkor Ashong, popularly referred to as “Maam Bea”, who also had portions of her house razed down by fire in the 2nd week of December 2014.

Nana Akufo-Addo consoled “Maam Bea”, whose house which used to be a meeting place for the holding of meetings of the United Party in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and still is a meeting place for the NPP in the constituency. Nana Addo donated a cash amount of GH¢500.00 to her.

“God bless you for this kind gesture and may He strengthen you. This is the happiest day of my life and when you become President in 2017, please jail all those who have caused Ghana to be in this economic mess,” the 92 year old woman said, amidst laughter from the gathering.

Also present at both sites were Nii Noi Dowuona, Klottey Korle NPP Constituency Chairman, Lawyer Frank Davies, La Dadekotopon NPP Constituency Chairman, Lawyer Philip Addison, and Hon. B.K. Adu (“Awet”), Chairman of Council of Elders in the Klottey Korle Constituency.
