Hassan Ayariga has claimed that the EC was wrong in declaring Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 general elections because he did not meet a basic constitutional requirement.

According to the Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), the only reason Akufo-Addo became president was that the EC wrongly computed the results.

Speaking with Etsey Atisu on Election Desk on GhanaWeb TV in a yet-to-be-aired episode, Hassan Ayariga said this is information he even brought to the attention of the Electoral Commission, but they ignored him.

He explained that in computing the results of the 2020 elections, the EC rather did the maths with the votes cast, not, as the constitution states, only valid votes cast.

“In the last election, I don’t want to say this, but I have to say it; nobody got 50 plus one percent – nobody. It’s because the EC did not follow due diligence in computing the results… the EC did not do a good job. The constitution says that a president shall be deemed a president if he gets 50 plus one of valid votes cast.

“In the last election, they did not use valid votes cast to determine the election; they used votes cast. The difference is that 17 million went to the polls to vote, 16 million were valid, 1 million was destroyed. So, if the one million was not valid – spoilt ballots, spoilt votes and all those things is one million. Now, in computing the results, you need to use 16 million, not 17. If you do that one, Akufo-Addo got 48.9, which is nowhere near 50 plus one. When I drew the attention of the EC, they did not want to hear,” he explained.
