Akufo-Addo in W/R to monitor EC’s registration

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has taken his monitoring of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise to some registration centres in the Western region.

En route to Enchi, in the Aowin constituency, for the funeral rites and burial ceremony of the late acting NPP Western Regional Chairman, Ben Kwaw, Nana Akufo-Addo visited some polling stations in the Bibiani/Anhwiaso/Bekwai constituency.

Accompanied by the MP for the constituency, Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu, the NPP flagbearer first visited the Victory Preparatory School centre, in Attakrom.

There, the EC official, Mr. Evans Ankrah, explained to the NPP flagbearer that turnout had been low, having registered only 5 first time voters, largely as a result of Friday being a market day. The opening day of the registration exercise on Thursday, he noted, recorded 18 new registrants, with the process later curtailed by torrential rainfall.

“I am hopeful that in the coming days, we will have more eligible voters coming to register. There have been no irregularities so far and we will ensure it continues throughout the remainder of the exercise,” the EC official added.

NPP polling agents at the centre reaffirmed their commitment towards remaining vigilant throughout the duration of the exercise, and assured Nana Akufo-Addo of their determination to ensuring that only eligible Ghanaians are registered during the exercise.

Having been notified about the presence of Nana Akufo-Addo in Attakrom, hundreds of residents and market women thronged the registration centre, demanding to see the NPP flagbearer before leaving the town.

Amidst chants of “yeresesamu”, to wit “we are changing”, and “afi y? wa fi”, to wit “this year is your year”, Nana Akufo-Addo interacted with market women, assuring them of better times ahead under an NPP government, God-willing from January 2017, and admonished all eligible persons who have not yet registered to do so, so they can vote for the change they are yearning for in this year’s election.

At the D/A primary school registration centre in Hwenampori, Nana Akufo-Addo also interacted with registration agents and polling agents of the NPP. There also, Mr. Paul Konadu Yiadom, the EC official in-charge, told the NPP flagbearer that the process has been smooth, with no hitches recorded.

“Do a good job for Ghana, and contribute your quota to ensuring that we have a credible voters’ register for this year’s election for the sake of Ghana’s peace and stability,” Nana Akufo-Addo told the EC officials and party agents present.

Gyedu, however, lamented about moves by some unscrupulous persons to bring in foreigners into the constituency to register. He, however, assured Nana Akufo-Addo that such moves had so far been effectively resisted and the NPP in the constituency will ensure that only eligible Ghanaian voters are registered to vote.
