The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has refuted reports that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo demanded the overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, to stand before greeting him.
The president was accused of disrespecting the overlord of Gonja by requesting him to descend from his throne to exchange handshakes during a durbar of chiefs in Damongo, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the king's enskinment.
In a statement dated April 30, 2024, Asamoah Boateng clarified that he was present at the durbar and confirmed that no such incident occurred.
He stated that the allegations of the president disrespecting the Yagbonwura are baseless and constitute mere propaganda.
“To dispel any doubts, it is crucial to emphasize that at no point during the President’s visit to Damongo on Saturday, April 27, 2024, was the Yagbonwura requested to stand up and greet the President.
“As the Minister, I accompanied the President at the event, and it is evident from videos that the President, with a cheerful demeanour, approached and respectfully greeted the Yagbonwura, who was hosting the event in Damongo. The public is advised to disregard this intentional and misleading propaganda being spread by those intent on causing mischief,” the minister asserted.
