Former Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson under the Mahama Administration, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has accused the incumbent Akufo-Addo’s government of being responsible for about 40% of Ghana’s total debt since the country’s independence.
According to him, this has turned the mantra of the NPP led government’s ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ into ‘Ghana Begging for Aid’.
Omane Boamah said in a statement copied to GhanaWeb that “It is official! Government has borrowed about GHC80 billion in record time, and there is very little to show for this gargantuan addition to the indebtedness. The debt has risen from GHC122 billion from Independence till 2016; to almost GHC200 billion in 2019.”
He further added that “obviously, as sad as it is, the Government regardless is blatantly burrowing the pit of borrowing, and if not stopped, it means Ghana’s present and its future is being buried with each passing loan agreement.”
