Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yammin has stated that President Akufo-Addo could have changed his position in answering the question regarding the legalization of homosexuality in Ghana.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo could have been smart to speak against legalization of homosexuality as the then-presidential candidate for New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“So do you think Nana Akufo-Addo will be dazzling around legalization of homosexuality before 2016 elections”, Hon. Joseph Yammin quizzed.

“I strongly believe he would be smart to say no because he will need Christians and Muslims to vote for him”, he stated on Kumasi-based Abusua FM morning show hosted by Kwame Adinkra.

According to the aspiring National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashanti Regional Chairman, President Akufo-Addo like his predecessors needed to state the position of Ghana on homosexuality.

Speaking to Aljazeera’s Jane Dutton the President Akufo-Addo said the country’s culture and tradition for now does not allow the legalisation of homosexuality but was quick to add that if public opinion changes, the law may just be amended

General Secretary of Christian Council, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong fears that if pressure is piled on government by advocates of homosexuality, it may cause a change in the law and the legalization of homosexuality.

“Maybe I didn’t hear him well, so somebody should come and explain to us exactly the policy direction of this government as far as same-sex marriage is concerned,” he demands.

“In public policy they say that what governments do or decide not to do are all policies so if we hear that one day if somebody can put pressure on Ghana we may change”, he said.
