Akufo-Addo unveils statue in honour of JB Danquah

The former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has commissioned a statue at Akyem Adadientem in the Eastern Region in honour of the late politician, scholar, lawyer, and statesman, Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah, widely known as JB Danquah.

The move forms part of activities commemorating the 61st anniversary of his passing and honouring his significant contributions to Ghana’s history and development.

Here is a brief profile of JB Danquah

He was a leading figure in Ghana’s independence movement.

Born into the royal Ofori Panin family, he studied in Ghana and the United Kingdom, becoming the first West African to earn a PhD from a British university.

Danquah co-founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and was a member of the “Big Six” who were detained following the 1948 Accra riots.

He later opposed Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP) and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1960.

He was arrested under the Preventive Detention Act and died in custody on February 4, 1965, at the age of 69.

Danquah is remembered for his lasting contributions to Ghanaian politics, law, and education.
