Akwatia citizens in New York endorse candidature of Ahiable

Akwatia (E/R), Nov. 7, GNA - the Akwatia Citizens Association in New York has expressed its support for Mr Basil Kwadwo Ahiable, an independent parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia constituency. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview from New York Mr Bernard Ofori Danso, chairman of the association, said from discussions members had with Mr Ahiable during his visit to the USA last month, they realized that he had good intentions of lifting the town from its present decay to its past glory.

Mr Danso said members were concerned about the present state of Akwatia and that they were looking for a reliable person at home through whom they could channel their contribution to salvage the situation. "We have seen that Mr Ahiable has laudable programmes for the area and we must support him."

Mr Michael Fifi Danso, an executive member of the association, expressed concern about how the once vibrant diamond mining and commercial town had virtually become a ghost town due to neglect and mismanagement of resources and facilities. "Our people are wallowing in abject poverty as all employment avenues had been closed" he said.

Mr Fred Darkwa, an executive member, said all the political parties the people of the area had followed woefully disappointed them and added "we have decided to give an independent candidate a chance this time". "We have studied the background of Mr Ahiable and we are convinced that he is capable of rescuing our town from the doldrums", Mr Darkwa said and appealed to the people of the area to vote massively for him. When Mr Ahiable was contacted, he said he had concluded an arrangement with an investor in the USA to establish a modern computer training centre at Akwatia. The centre, which would train students in both hard and software computing up to the first degree level, is expected to take off next year.

Mr Ahiable said he had also made contacts for investment in oil palm production and fish farming and expressed the hope that they would yield results. Mr Ahiable said even though Akwatia needed a multi faceted approach in solving problems facing the area, he was hopeful that he would make a mark when elected to parliament. He said borehole projects he had initiated from his own resources had been completed and the people of Asubone and Dugbatsekope could now enjoy potable water.
