Akwatia, Aug. 18, GNA - Voting in the Akwatia constituency parliamentary re-run election in six poling stations began peacefully at 0700 hours on Tuesday.

Security personnel are observing the polls at the stations where voters started queuing as soon as the curfew was lifted at 0600 hours. Security men can be found patrolling the Akwatia town, particularly around the polling stations both on foot and in vehicles. The six polling stations are Presbyterian JSS with 1,183 registered voters, Yoruba Mosque "A" 920 voters, Yoruba Mosque "B" 838 voters, Lorry station "B" 626 voters and AME Zion Church 404 voters. The re-run became necessary following the disruption of voting at those places by some unidentified persons and ballot boxes including voting materials vandalized.

Three political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Convention People's Party (CPP) including two Independent candidates are contesting the election. However the battle is seen between the NDC candidate, Mr Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed and Dr Kofi Asare, of the NPP.

In the collated ballot from 83 out of 89 polling stations in the constituency during last year's election, Dr Asare polled 16,889 as against 13,810 votes bagged by Mr Jamal.

Mr Samuel Agyei of the CPP secured 109, with the two Independent candidates, Mr Basil Ahiable and Mr Samuel Abrokwah polling 1,835 and 64 votes respectively
