The youth of Akyem Tafo Zongo in the Abuakwa North constituency of the Eastern Region are calling for the immediate arrest of Bright Ernest Akomea, alias “Double,” a national security operative, over a shooting incident that injured two Zongo youth.

The shooting incident occurred on the evening of December 8, after the elections.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of National Security operatives, allegedly led by “Double,” encountered youth from Akyem Tafo Zongo in front of the District office of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The operatives, numbering about eight, appeared when the youth attempted to stop a taxi they suspected was transporting thumb-printed ballots to the EC office for alleged stuffing.

The tension escalated, resulting in the operatives firing several rounds of gunshots.

Two individuals sustained injuries, with one discharged after treatment and the other in critical condition.

The critically injured victim was referred from the Akyem Tafo Hospital to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.

Eyewitness Katsekpor Gershon shared details of the incident in an interview “I was watching him(Double) when he was talking to them. I saw one of them pulling out an ID card that said they were national security. Within a few seconds, we heard the gunshots. So it is “Double ” and his men who came to cause this problem here. The shooting that happened is double. I am saying it on authority because he stood right in front of me one-on-one one we exchanged words”.

At a press conference jointly held by the youth and the NDC Abuakwa North constituency, convener Sulemana Awudu, alias Don Sly, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest “Double” and his accomplices.

They cited his alleged history of involvement in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence as evidence of his dangerous conduct.

The youth also accused Nana Kwame Addo Frimpong Ampaw, popularly known as Chief Buffalo and the NPP parliamentary candidate, of inviting the National Security operatives to Akyem Tafo Zongo, allegedly facilitating the violent incident.

“We will not rest until justice is served. Our brothers were innocent victims of violence and intimidation, and those responsible must be held accountable”.

The Youth questioned why Zongo communities continue to suffer fatal gun attacks by security operatives in the country warning that if not stopped Zongo communities will rise.

He hinted at plans to embark on a demonstration to demand justice for the victims.
