The Associate Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana, Dr Baffuor Agyeman Duah has expressed disappointment at the ex-Speaker for allowing himself him self to be used by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Commenting on the drama in Parliament last Friday over the selection of the Speaker and its aftermath, Dr Agyeman Duah indicated in an interview that it was unfortunate for Ala Adjetey to accept the proposal of the NDC knowing that the NDC was in the minority in Parliament
According to him, Mr Adjetey had availed himself for the NDC to be used saying ? I feel embarrassed for him. He should have known as a politician that the NDC would do everything possible to convince him?.
Dr Agyeman-Duah was optimistic that the new speaker would be unbiased in his administration as he promised in his acceptance speech.
? There is no cause about his worry about his performance. There is ample evidence that he would exercise his discretion according to the dictates of the Constitution. I think he would cooperate with both the minority and Majority to run the affairs of Parliament,? he said.
Prior to the election of the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Begina Sekyi Hughes, the Minority in Parliament was reported to have met Mr. Ala Adjetey in his house at East Cantonment and prevailed upon him to acquiesce to plans to nominate him as the Speaker for a second term.
The meeting was said to have taken place in the evening of January 6, a day preceding the normal election date, where the minority leadership was said to have told Mr. Ala Adjetey that they had had reports from the ruling NPP to retain him.
According to the reports, the immediate past speaker, after been convinced by the minority that they had garnered enough votes for both sides to retain him, gave his consent and appended his signature to that effect.
