Accra, Sept. 10, GNA - Professor Joshua Alabi, an Economist had been appointed as the Rector of the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) for a four-year term with effect from January 1, 2009. Professor Alabi, Acting Rector, takes over from Reverend Father J.J.M. Martey, who retires on December 31, 2008.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr William Boamah Dapaah, Registrar of the Institute said the appointment was made at the 34th regular meeting of the Governing Council of the Institute on September 4, this year.
It said Prof. Alabi was born on March 1, 1958 and after completing his primary education at St. John's Preparatory Primary School and secondary education at Tamale Secondary School, and continued at the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) in 1976 as a student. He pursued the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and Society of Company and Commercial Accountant Courses at IPS and completed in 1980.
The statement said Prof. Alabi was a graduate of the Moscow Institute of National Economy in 1986 and the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1992, where he graduated in Master of Science in Industrial Economics and Master of Science in International Marketing.
Prof. Alabi is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Ghana and an International Marketing Professional.
It said Prof. Alabi had about 21 years of professional practice as a lecturer at IPS with teaching experience in both Marketing and Economics.
"Having served the Institute for over two decades, Prof. Alabi diligently contributed his quota in the forward move of the Institute. He played a leading role in the establishment of the Marketing Department of the Institute," it said.
The statement said some technical reports and innovative proposals, which were implemented towards achieving the Institute's objectives, could be attributed to him.
The statement said Prof. Alabi was a member of the Governing Council of IPS and its Standing Committee, a Member of Parliament for Krowor Constituency and Greater Accra Regional Minister during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime.
He served institutionally as Head of Marketing Department, Dean of Management Faculty, Acting Deputy Director, Pro-Rector and latest as Acting Rector of IPS.
The statement said currently, Prof. Alabi served on some statutory committees of the Institute including Finance, Budget, Research and Conferences, Publication as well as the Academic Board. It said as part of his social activities, Prof. Alabi joined the football fraternity and served as Director of Administration of Accra Great Olympics Football Club.
He was once General Secretary of Ghana League Clubs Association, a member of the Management Board of Ghana Football Association and Chairman of Black Stars Management Committee.
It said Prof. Alabi's vision for IPS over the next four years included the running of Masters Degree programmes, consolidation of undergraduate degree programmes and innovative programmes to meet the needs of society.
