Aliu Mahama Foundation launches medical outreach programme at Nsawam Prisons

A medical outreach programme to provide free medical care for prison inmates in major prisons across the country was launched yesterday, Wednesday, 29th April 2018 at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The medical outreach programme, dubbed “My Health Behind Bars” is in collaboration with the Divine Group International. The aim is to provide free medical diagnosis, treatments, and consultancy to the inmates.

It is envisioned to affect thousands of prisoners in 43 Prisons. The Foundation holds a strong conviction that the right to health of the prisoners are still intact even though their freedom of movement has been curtailed.

In his address as a board member of the Foundation, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, son of the late former Vice-President averred that the prime objective of the Foundation is to honour the memory and fulfill the vision of the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama who stood for a just and disciplined society that signifies the life of every Ghanaian.

He expressed the Foundation's intention to make the programme far-reaching and thanked all organisations that contributed in diverse ways to make the programme a success.

The Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia, in an address done on her behalf, expressed the desire of her Office to support social interventions to make healthcare accessible to all Ghanaians particularly the marginalized.

The event was graced by the MCE of Nsawam, officials from Ministry of Health, Director General of Ghana Prisons Service, officials from WHO and many other dignitaries.
