Member of the New Patriotic Party, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has disclosed that the Aliu Mahama Foundation intends to assist female porters, popularly known as ‘Kayayei’ by training them.

Addressing the press, during the launch of the 5th anniversary celebration of the passing of the late Vice President, Mr Otchere-Darko explained that the funding for this initiative will be solely from a fundraising auction.

“The funds from the fundraising auction of the works will go to the Aliu Mahama Foundation, in support of its work with education and on training some of the Kayayei girls, who migrate from the Northern regions to Accra for better economic opportunities”, he explained.

Mr. Otchere-Darko, who is the Chairman of the Planning Committee of the celebration, reiterated that providing education to these female porters is a topmost priority of the foundation.

“Expanding access to education for these women, who predominantly have no formal education is a priority for the foundation”, he added.

The 5th anniversary celebration of the passing of the late Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, will commence on November 16, 2017, which is exactly five years since his passing.
