All set for #DumsorMustStop vigil as police, organizers reach agreement

All is set for the June 8, 2024, demonstration against the persistent power outages plaguing the nation, dubbed the #DumsorMustStop vigil, as the organizers of the protest and the Ghana Police have reportedly come to an agreement.

According to Henry Osei Akoto, one of the organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil, the police and the organizers have agreed on the date and the route for the demonstration.

Osei Akoto, who disclosed this in an audio recording shared with GhanaWeb on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, said that the demonstration would start at the University of Ghana and end at the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout.

“This afternoon around 4:00 p.m., myself, Salom Ramado, and then Yvonne Nelson met with the police commander, DSP Mr. Arhin, at his office with his team. And we've agreed on the date, that is, June 8, 2024, for the vigil.

“We've settled on everything. The police are okay with it, and the time too. So, all is set,” Henry Osei Akoto said.

He added, “Come Saturday, we are all converging in front of the University of Ghana, Legon, and the vigil will be on.”

He urged Ghanaians to come out in their numbers to express their displeasure over the failure of the government to ensure a constant supply of electricity.

The organizers of the demonstration were forced to change the date, venue, and route of the protest after an injunction by the Ghana Police Service.

The demonstration, which was initially set for May 25, 2024, at Revolution Square near the Jubilee House, has been postponed to June 8, 2024.

A legal petition filed on May 20, 2024, requested an injunction against the protest, citing concerns for public order and safety.

The organizers of the vigil, Selorm Dzramado, actress Yvonne Nelson, and Henry Akoto, after the injunction announced that the gathering would commence in front of the University of Ghana, with participants marching to the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout.

Upon reaching the roundabout, speeches will be delivered from a specially erected podium before the crowd disperses.

The revised timing for the vigil is from 2 pm to 10 pm, a shift from the originally planned 8 am start.
