All you need to know about NACOC's search for 'illicit drugs' at Nsawam Prison

A team from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service officers, conducted a search at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in Nsawam.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, the team, consisting of nine NACOC members and 20 operations officers from the prison service, conducted an extensive search for illicit drugs at the facility on April 14, 2024.

Accompanied by sniffer dogs, the personnel thoroughly searched every area of the prison, including cells, workshops, classrooms, church, mosque, hospital, and other areas, but did not find any narcotics.

Following the search, the second in command of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Assistant Director of Prisons Andrews Osei, expressed gratitude to the NACOC officers for their efforts.

He announced plans for regular searches to maintain a drug-free environment in the prison, ensuring the well-being of both inmates and officials.

The director also noted that the outcome of the search challenges public perceptions of drug prevalence in prisons.

"This very exercise aimed to search and retrieve narcotic drugs in the prison facility amid public opinion that prisons are breeding grounds for illegal drugs such as narcotics," graphic.com.gh quoted him as saying.

The security sweep by NACOC is not limited to Nsawam; it is expected to extend to various prisons nationwide to prevent the misuse of illicit drugs by inmates.
