Accra, Oct. 28, GNA - A delegation of the Lincoln's Inn Alumni, Ghana, led by Mr Justice N.Y.B. Adade, a retired Supreme Court Judge, on Friday called on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu, to congratulate him on his induction as an Honorary Bencher of the Governing Council of the prestigious United Kingdom (UK) Institution. The Benchers constitute the highest authority of the institution and it is the most distinguished position a member of the Inn could attain.
No leader in Ghana or the West African sub-region has ever ascended to this height, which President Kufuor shares only with former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa.
A Citation they presented to him read, "Mr President, the members of the Ghana Bar who had the privilege to be educated in the same Inn as your good self are proud of you and share in the honour done to you." It wished him the blessings of God to bring to successful conclusion, his good work regarding national development, economic prosperity, good governance and the upliftment of fundamental human rights in Ghana.
"We congratulate you for the honour done to our noble profession and our dear nation Ghana."
President Kufuor said he felt humbled that he belonged to that class of distinction.
He noted that out of the UK's 17 Prime Minister's, 16, including Lady Margaret Thatcher, were educated at the Lincoln's Inn. President Kufuor said law had many branches and while some lawyers trained to become administrators and barristers, he chose to go into politics.
"Lawmaking is the business of all and this is done in Parliament and that is why I started off as a Parliamentarian." President Kufuor, who was called to the English Bar on November 21, 1961, was inducted as an Honorary Bencher of the Inn on February 20, this year.
Also at the Castle was Mr Seni Adetu, the new Managing Director of Guinness Ghana Limited.
President Kufuor said the company was a strategic partner in the running of the country's economy, adding that he was confident Mr Adetu would be up to the task and play a worthy part to support the economy.
