Amasaman(G/A), June 23, - Teachers from schools in the Amasaman District today started a two-day workshop to review the teacher's handbook on health education for basic schools at Amasaman in the Ga district. The handbook aims to promote sound learning and effective teaching of personal hygiene and the dangers of drug abuse, Sexually Transmitted Diseases(STD's), HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy. The workshop, also being attended by students and pupils, is being organized by the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Health with funding from the Ga District Assembly. Participants will be taken through topics such as prevention of diseases like diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, immunization and drug abuse. Mr Abed Kwakye Owusu, Ga District Chief Executive, said due to lack of good drinking water in most of the villages, the district is plagued with many diseases such as bilharzia, cholera and guinea worm. He said the sound health of every school-age child is essential. This, he said, is not only to enable the child to survive and learn effectively but to ensure regular school attendance and good academic performance. It will also reduce school drop-outs, truancy and disorderly behaviour among adolescents.
