A private legal practitioner, Yaw Dankwah, says it is premature for the Ghana Bar Association to intervene in the public dispute between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the ongoing trial of the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, over the 2.7 million Euros ambulance saga.
The Attorney General, Godfred Dame, has come under intense pressure following claims by the third accused in the case, Richard Gyakpa, in open court that the AG coerced him to incriminate Dr. Ato Forson.
The NDC and the NPP have been engaged in a dispute over the matter, with both parties making allegations and counter-allegations.
There have been calls for the Ghana Bar Association to intervene in the matter.
But speaking to Starr News, Lawyer Yaw Dankwah said it is too early for the association of lawyers to make a public comment on the issue.
"Allegations have been made against the Attorney General, and I think his office has made some sort of response; of course, we have not heard from the Attorney General himself to say anything to Ghanaians. I think it is premature for the Ghana Bar Association to intervene at this point because it is a mere allegation that has been made. People should be given the opportunity to defend themselves or at least to respond.
"So, I don’t think the Ghana Bar Association should get involved in something that it does not have any evidence to support, and they just go with hearsay or a statement from a person who has made a statement in court. Why should they take it up? Whatever happens in court is for the judge to make a determination on it. It is not for the Ghana Bar Association to interfere with court proceedings."
