American Peace Corps sworn-in

Techiman (B/A) Nov. 27, GNA- The second batch of the American Peace Corps Volunteers trained to help community and eco tourism in deprived areas of the country were on Friday sworn in at Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The 30 volunteers were trained in different languages, culture and customs for ten weeks, taking in the oath of services pledged to work hard to bring about change in the various communities they might be operating.

Swearing in the volunteers, Mrs. Madeleine Mader, country Director Peace Corps-Ghana, commended the chief and people of communities the volunteers undertook the training for their hospitality, kindness and support and asked the volunteers to use the skills acquired to enhance development projects.

Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister who was the guest speaker, noted that the American Peace Corps since Independence had continued to render quality services to the country and expressed satisfaction for their services.

The Peace Corps, he said had also helped to rekindle the spirit of voluntarism, sacrifice and discipline in our youth especially in the communities where they operated and gave the assurance that the government would guarantee their safety, security and support to serve the nation.

He reminded the volunteers not to forget to see themselves as the ambassadors of their country, and live above reproach. Mrs Joy Afful, Training Manager Peace Corps- Ghana, explained that the Peace Corps Volunteers served mostly in deprived communities where most Ghanaians refused to work.

She said the volunteers during the ten-week training learned some local languages includinhg Ewe, Fanti, Kusaal, Dagbani, Dagaare, Buili, Gurune, and Twi.

Mrs Afful said the volunteers were also trained in skills required to create awareness about HIV/AIDS, gender and youth development. She therefore asked the people to give them the maximum cooperation to enable them to perform their duties effectively. 27 Nov 04
