The Electoral Officer for the Akatsi North registration centre in Volta Region in the just ended limited registration exercise, Mr Peter Anku has debunked media reports that electoral officers on Thursday attempted transporting registration materials to the Togo border to register foreigners.
The Volta Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Peter Amewu had alleged he was assaulted by the police because he took photographs of a vehicle which was transporting electoral materials to the border to register foreigners.
“In Ghana a national patrol team cannot behave the way they are because were they were taking the vehicle to was close to Togo that village was not part of the registration center. Under no condition should a police vehicle drive to a centre and carry registration equipment. It is not allowed. I an attempt to find out if they were real policemen, they started mishandling me… they used the barrel of the gun against my left hand but I later lodged complaint at the central police office in Ho.”
But Mr. Anku said the information was skewed. According to him they were forced to relocate to a different location after some thugs stormed the registration centre to attack observers of the NDC and also preventing persons from registering.
Mr. Peter Anku said Mr. Peter Amewu stormed the centre together with his monitoring team taking pictures without confronting him or asking reason why the EC had parked the materials into the vehicle.
"Mr. Amewu stormed the centre and started taking photos of the vehicle. He did not consult me, so the police asked them why they were doing that- this led to a heated argument but nobody was assaulted or attacked. Mr. Amewu was not attacked. The information was skewed. I personally called the police after the thugs stormed the centre. They attempted to burn our vehicle so we had to load the things into the vehicle for security reasons. Nobody was attacked, that i can confirmed although some unknown macho men stormed the registration centre to disrupt the registration exercise. But i suspect they were from both political parties."
