Amidu is bitter – Opoku

Special Prosecutor nominee Martin Amidu is bitter towards some members of his own party the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Opoku, an Energy Expert, has said.

According to him, Mr Amidu has issues against some members of the largest opposition party in Ghana who he thinks have diluted the principles upon which the party was formed.

Mr Amidu was vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday February 13, 2018.

During the vetting, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who is also a member of the committee quoted from page 465 of a book authored by former Attorney General, Dr Asamoah under whom Mr Amidu worked.

Mr Ablakwa asked Mr Amidu what he made of a damning verdict passed on him by his former boss when his choice as a running mate to candidate Mills was described as “unproductive move” and a candidate who will not be beneficial to the ticket.

In response, Mr Amidu said “Mr Chairman in the first place Dr Asamoah is not my boss, he did not pay my bills through the law school. He was called to the Bar, I was called to the Bar. He didn’t appoint me Deputy Attorney General, I was appointed Deputy Attorney General before he came there and I served under Aikins, Nana Tandoh, Mr Forson came for six months before he was asked to act, and we are colleagues.

“Except that he was Attorney General and I was the deputy and therefore I knew my place and worked with him, that doesn’t make him my boss. You’re reading a self-serving book, in which he wanted to be the Vice Presidential candidate, he was by-passed, the Presidential candidate saw his deputy more competent and excellent than him.

Commenting on this development on TV3’s New Day on Saturday February 17, Mr Opoku said : “If you look at the history of Mr Amidu in the NDC from 1999, how he became the vice presidential candidate, he has a history.

“But there is a level of bitterness. He is an old guard, one of the cadres who feels the NDC tradition which stands for certain principles is being diluted. He is seeing a new influx of people come in a dilute those principles and taking it to a different level.

“What I can say is that there is a bitterness between him and some elements within the party who he feels that are diluting the tradition of the part.”
