Amidu's lamentations sad, disappointing - Vitus Azeem

Anti-Corruption crusader, Vitus Azeem, is challenging the government to prove its commitment to the fight against corruption by resourcing the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

He described the recent lamentation of Martin Amidu as “sad” and “disappointing”.

“The Special Prosecutor’s office is one of the key promises of the NPP government when they were in opposition. Creating of the office is not just passing the law. It means resourcing, giving the office the necessary tools to be able to work. It’s disappointing the Special Prosecutor is making claims,” Azeem said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.

Amidu has lamented the lack of resources to enable his office work effectively and efficiently as expected by some Ghanaians in his quest to fight corruption.

Speaking at the National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service, Mr Amidu stated that he is using his “common sense” to run the office in absence of some laws.

“The law says 90 days after the assumption of office of the Special Prosecutor, pursuant legislation must be enacted, but as I speak today, I have no legislation so I use my common sense,” he said.

However, Vitus Azeem said that “government is not committed to the office in their quest to fight corruption and work effectively”.

NDC’s Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has also said the complaints by the Special Prosecutor, Mr Martin Amidu regarding his (Amidu's) outfit are all “inconsequential” and "false".

“If he [Amidu] says he has no laws to work, then it is not correct,” he emphatically stated.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor who is a member of the Legal Committee of Parliament pointed out that, Martin Amidu has been given the ‘room to operate’, but has so far failed to meet expectations.
