Amidu’s rigging claim intolerable – Petitioner

Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has moved beyond criticising his own party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to making wild allegations against it, and, so, he should be disciplined by the leadership of Ghana’s biggest opposition party, Abigail Elorm Mensah, one of two petitioners who want the Citizen Vigilante disciplined, has said.

According to Ms Mensah, just like any other person, Mr Amidu has the right to criticise his party but he has overstepped his boundary in doing so by making wild allegations against the party and former president John Mahama when he accused the NDC government of specifically appointing Mrs Charlotte Osei as Chair of the Electoral Commission to rig last year’s elections for the party.

Mr Amidu in a recent article said Mrs Osei is “incompetent” and was only appointed into office by the “corrupt” Mahama administration to “rig” the 2016 polls in favour of the NDC.

Following this, Ms Mensah and one other member of the NDC, petitioned the party to discipline Mr Amidu, saying that some of his epistles were “carefully designed to expose the party to public hatred, ridicule and opprobrium and to lower its reputation in Ghana and elsewhere.”

Mr Amidu has subsequently described the petition, in another article, as “immoral”.

Speaking in an interview with Accra News on Wednesday, 9 August, Ms Mensah said: “He moved beyond criticising the party to dragging the image of the party into disrepute.

"He also made wild allegations against the party when he said President Mahama appointed Charlotte Osei to rig the elections for the NDC, and, so, until he adduces evidence to support this claim, he should be disciplined.”
