Accra, Oct. 15, GNA - Nana Stephen Owusu-Nsiah, Inspector General of Police, on Wednesday said crime analysis was the most effective way of combating the menace in modern times.

"We can effectively control and prevent organised crime and terrorist activities if we can analyse crime properly."

Nana Owusu-Nsiah was speaking at the opening of a two-day international workshop on: "Crime Analysis" in Accra. It was organised by the Interpol Secretariat for English Speaking African Countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Gambia and Tanzania.

He said while intelligence had been employed for centuries for military and security purposes its use, as a law enforcement tool, was recent.

The Police Chief said globalisation and its advantages had also brought about the changes in the course of criminal activity, paving the way for free flow of money for criminal activities. He cautioned that trans-national crimes had assumed new heights with the use of information technology and was of the opinion that Interpol's quest to fight crime collectively would be the answer to the new threat.

"The organisation of this first analysis awareness workshop in Accra is therefore a step in the right direction.....It is my hope that this workshop would greatly improve the capabilities to fight crime effectively and efficiently so that together we can make the world a safer place to live in."

Mr Adamu Mohammed, a Representative of the Secretary-General of Interpol, said the programme was to equip participating countries to combat modern technological crimes.

He said the workshop would assess problems facing these countries and how Interpol could assist in resolving them.
