Dr Richard Anane, the minister for Road Transportation, has resigned. The beleaguered minister submitted a letter of resignation to President Kufuor after a marathon meeting with some cabinet members (on Monday evening).
"It was an emotional day at the castle as the President, some ministers and NPP faithfuls consoled Anane, who broke down in tears, while presenting his resignation letter," according to the pro-government newspaper Accra Daily Mail
"In his resignation letter, Anane thanked the President for giving him the opportunity to serve the country. A dream, he said has come to pass. He also thanked the NPP party faithfuls for their unflinching support in the years.
He, however, assured the president and the NPP party that he will fight to prove his innocence," continued ADM.
“I know I am innocent and I will prove that in the days to come”, he said.
The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) proposed Dr. Anane’s removal from office two weeks ago after it found him guilty of perjury, conflict of interest and abuse of office.
The investigation stemmed from Dr Anane's relationship with an American woman, Alexandria O'Brien when he was Minister of Health and money that was transferred to her. The relationship developed into a love affair that produced a son.
The Commission recommended that public office holders and Government appointees should undergo a course in conflict of interest and that Special Assistants to Senior Public Officer should be paid from the Consolidated Fund if that position should be maintained. It also called for the upgrading of the laws if the Government's policy of zero tolerance on corruption should work.
