The Executive Director of the Centre for Freedom and Accuracy, Andrew Awuni, whose quest to stop the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz was derailed when a Commercial Court in Accra threw out the case because he lacked locus, has filed an appeal against the court’s decision through his counsel, Lawyer Egbert Faibille.

But Frank Nii Darko, a member of the Government’s Communication machinery, has faulted the zeal of the Former Press Secretary of ex-President Kufuor to challenge the Merchant Bank-Fortiz deal describing him as a “hypocrite,” for failing to conduct the same ardor when Ghana Telecom was sold to Vodafone.

Speaking to the issue on “Ghana Decides” program on Okay Fm, the NDC communicator expressed no surprise over the decision of the Commercial Court to throw out the case of Mr. Andrew Awuni, in spite of him being a SSNIT contributor.

According to him, the case of the Public Interest Crusader was just one of empty noise-making amounting to nothing when it comes to matters of law because to him, the plaintiff has no shares or interest to defend the survival or the collapse of Merchant Bank.

He asserted that Mr. Andrew Awuni has no moral justification to stop the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz Equity Fund, as he witnessed the sale of Ghana Telecom in his capacity as a Press Secretary to former President Kufuor.

“….I can see that Andrew Awuni is a hypocrite because he witnessed the sale of Ghana Telecom as a Press Secretary to the former President Kufuor; he did nothing to challenge the sale of the only prestigious Telecommunication network for the country at a time when Hon. P.C Appiah Ofori alleged of bribery prior to the sale of Ghana Telecom,” he asserted.

He opined that the erstwhile Kufuor administration did a great harm to the country by selling a lot of state properties while Mr. Andrew Awuni was serving as a Press Secretary.

“…..the same thing happened to WESTEL, AngloGold Ashanti and GIA, but we did not see Andrew Awuni and Egbert Faibille in court fighting against their own party over the sale of those state assets; Andrew Awuni should have stepped down from Kufuor’s administration to defend the sale of those properties if he wanted to be seen as a good citizen,” he stated.
