Daniel Nortey, a communications officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress
Some social media users have descended heavily on Daniel Nortey, a communications officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Amasaman, Accra, over controversial remarks he made concerning rape allegations involving a senior high school headmaster.
Nortey, who appeared as a panelist on Amansan TV, was discussing a recent sex scandal involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, who has been accused of sexually assaulting and engaging in sexual relationships with several female students.
His comments on the allegations have since sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning his stance on sexual violence.
The embattled headmaster, who also serves as the NDC's General Secretary in the Juaben Constituency of the Ashanti Region, was reportedly compelled to resign and barred from contesting the party's upcoming constituency chairmanship election following the allegations.
However, during the television discussion, Nortey appeared to downplay the seriousness of the allegations, questioning those criticising the headmaster.
"He's a rapist, so what? Is today the first time someone is raping someone?" he remarked.
He then turned his attention to another panelist, asking, "Haven't you also raped someone before?"
The remarks, which have since circulated widely on social media, have attracted fierce backlash, with several users condemning Nortey for what they described as an insensitive attitude towards rape and sexual violence.
Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah was among those who strongly criticised the NDC communicator.
"Buuuuulu. A lot of men haven’t raped any woman before and would never…and find your existence repulsive. Siaaaaa," she wrote.
Another social media user expressed outrage, stating, "All these animals have relevance because of politics when they need to be in a zoo. In a serious country, they’d investigate him, and he has probably raped several times."
A third user also reacted angrily, writing, "Look this an!mal. Siato.. Been on tv and having the courage to say this. Wow.."

@thenanaaba Social media is the reason why people are becoming aware of this. Rape has been normalized for far too long, out of every 10 girl you meet at least 6 have ever been raped or sexually abused by a family friend, teacher, extended family member, mostly just a familiar male figure.
