Kumasi, July 19, GNA--Over 500 people, including the aged, youth and children were on Saturday given free medical screening and medication by the Kumasi Diocese of the Anglican Church at the Saint Cyprian's Anglican Cathedral in Kumasi. The exercise was sponsored by the Diocesan Health Guild, in collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Health Directorate in line with the Church's vision of meeting its social responsibilities of caring for the poor and needy.
A team of 60 medical personnel comprising doctors, nurses and pharmacists drawn from the Church's Health Guild, conducted the exercise, which focused on hypertension, diabetes, malaria, chest infections, eye-screening, ear, nose and throat (ENT). Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the exercise, Dr Robert Quansah, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Chairman of the Cathedral Health Committee, said the medical team concentrated on these areas of diseases due to their high incidence among both the aged and the youth.
He said these diseases were on the increase due to the lack of regular medical check-up and the general lifestyle of most people and therefore, advocated regular body exercises and medical check-ups to prevent pre-mature deformities and deaths. The Very Reverend Dr Yeboah Asuamah, Dean of the Saint Cyprian's Cathedral, said the exercise would be an annual affair.
