Angry taxi drivers fight UCC Vice Chancellor

Taxi drivers in University of Cape Coast (UCC) campus on Wednesday blocked part of the road that links the University’s main campus to Kowpoh community to protest the university’s management decision to introduce stickers for taxis.

The drivers blocked the Kowpoh junction to the university road for over three hours, a situation that disrupted the movement of students to and fro the campus.

Nana Yaw Sarpong Abura, Local GPRTU Executive Member complained to Nyansapow Timothy of Cape Coast based Darling FM that a directive from the Vice Chancellor to all taxi drivers in the metropolis to purchase stickers before being allowed entry into the university is not something which sits well with them.

According to the drivers, complying with the directive would negatively affect their work and daily sales.

Mr Sarpong stated further that several meetings with the Vice Chancellor for him to rescind his decision have fallen on rocks.

“We are fed up with the intimation by the Cape Coast University’s management and we decided to demonstrate in front of the campus to protest and in the process also calling government to call vice chancellor order…,” he said.

Students who were stranded as a result of the demonstration by the Taxi Drivers also complained about the situation.

“We are very shocked at the situation, some of us are having lectures this morning and this afternoon too. Therefore, we are appealing to school authorities to address this challenge…,” some students who spoke to Nyansapow appealed.
