Annan opens art exhibition

Accra, Sept. 27, GNA - Ghana's High Commissioner to the UK has opened an eight-day art exhibition mounted by five leading Ghanaian artists in London. A statement issued by the Ghana High Commission in London said the exhibition entitled "The Call" is taking place at La Galleria, Pall Mall, London.

It said the exhibition, inspired by the ancient tradition of West Africa's rich cultural heritage, sought to celebrate the importance of 50 years of Ghana's artistic expression since the country's independence from British rule and also to celebrate how art had been a medium through which Ghana carved out an identity for itself after its struggle and acquisition of independence.

In an address, Mr. Cato praised the artists - Mr Sam Bentil, Mr Wiz Kudowor, Mr Glen Turner, Mr Rikki Wemega Kwaku and Nii T.Mills - for mounting the show.

He said Ghanaians took great pride in their culture because of its intrinsic beauty and diversity and because culture defined the Ghanaian personality.

Mr Cato said Ghanaians had since independence sought to confront the many challenges that confronted them.

He said Ghana had set her sights on achieving a middle income status by 2015, a feat that called for greater vision, dedication, hard work and the un-comprising urge to achieve excellence in all fields of the country's developmental endeavours. The show will raise funds for three leading charities - wellbeing of women DWIB Leukaemia Trust and Spirituality for kids.
