Accra, Aug. 5, GNA - The Annette Nkrumah Memorial Foundation, a non-profit charity was launched on Friday in memory of a Ghanaian activist, who contributed immensely to the economic empowerment of women and the nation's democratic freedom. The foundation is to provide continuity to the noble ideas and charitable work of Mrs. Annette Nkrumah who died a year ago. In her entire life, Annette worked to provide skills and training to migrant women and facilitated employment and educational programmes for young workers.
Born in 1957 in Hohoe in the Volta Region, Mrs Annette Nkrumah took active part in student militant politics and the struggle of the 1970's, becoming a leading activist in the progressive movement in the University of Science and Technology, as well as the Pan African Youth Movement. Launching the foundation, First Lady Theresa Kufuor, in a statement read for her, said Annette was a woman who hated injustice and had the courage to always defend the oppressed. She said Annette played a key role in the safe evacuation of Ghanaians from Nigeria in 1985.
Mrs Kufuor urged all patrons, friends of Annette and trustees of the foundation to help sustain it. She expressed the hope that women and children would drink from the fountain of this foundation. Until her death, Annette was an active member of the Convention People's Party.
