The Tamale West Hospital in the Northern Region has once again rescued a day-old baby who was purportedly abandoned by her mother, making it the second incident in less than two months.
In recent times the Tamale West Hospital has been turned into a babies’ dumping place by some unscrupulous nursing mothers, apparently an indication of untold hardship in the country.
A patient at the facility told DAILY GUIDE that at about 5am Tuesday, she saw a young lady walking around the female ward. Suspicious about the movement of the lady, the patient said she decided to go closer to the lady, and that when she (lady) realized that there was someone coming closer to her, she took to her heels.
According to the patient, the disappearance of the lady prompted her to search the area only to discover that the day-old baby had been abandoned in a bush close to the female ward.
According to Hajia Ayi, a Public Health Nurse at the hospital, the baby had been rescued for medical treatment.
She indicated that per their investigations, the baby was not born at the facility and did not know why it had become the habit of some women to abandon their babies at the facility or close to it.
She suggested that management should beef up security and stressed the need to install CCTV cameras at the facility immediately to check every activity around the area.
The baby was later taken to the regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
