Another video of gross disinformation on the pending December 7, 2024, general elections at Kumasi-based Wontumi Radio has gone viral.

In the said video, a man donning the colours of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggested that eligible votes are to thumbprint from the first candidate till they get to the person they intend to vote for.

He suggested that the presidential election would be like that of unit committee elections for district assemblies, where voters can choose more than one person.

“If you still want to vote for John, if you are voting for number 8, you have to thumbprint from number 1, number 2, number 3 and you continue till you get to number 8 then you stop. I hope you understand me.

“You would choose from the top, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, till you get to 8. Don’t go beyond 8, just as we do during Unit Committee elections. After you are done, then you will fold your ballot paper and put it in the ballot box,” he said in Twi.

He added, “This is how the election is going to be. If you want to vote for number 1, just thumbprint there but if you want to vote for number 8, you have to thumbprint 8 times.”

It is instructive to note that the claims of the man are totally false.

Eligible voters are to choose one out of the 12 candidates contesting in the 2024 presidential elections.

Ballot papers of voters who choose more than one candidate would be considered invalid or spoilt ballots.

This is the second major disinformation from Wontumi Radio that has gone viral in the last week.

Over the weekend, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a presenter of Wontumi Radio/TV, after he claimed that the 2024 presidential election would be held on different days.

The police accused him of publication of false news contrary to Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The police released Nana Asiedu on bail as it continues to investigate the intent and potential impact of the presenter’s comments.
