Anwhiankwanta-Yamoransa road to be rehabilitated

Adansi-Fomena (Ash), Oct.29, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday said the government would rehabilitate the Anwhiankwanta-Yamoransa road if the NPP was voted for a second tenure to facilitate economic development.

He expressed suspicion about the award of the contract and the contracting firm that worked on road only for it to deteriorate within few years after its construction.

President Kufuor was addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of the Adansi Traditional Area at Fomena on the second day of his six-day official tour of the Ashanti Region.

He warned that contractors in the area who would undertake shoddy work or delay in executing their projects would have their contracts re-awarded to more competent contractors.

President Kufuor said the Akrokeri Training College would be upgraded under the new Education policy to be introduced next year. In response to an appeal by the chiefs for the traditional rulers to be represented on the board of directors of the AngloGold Ashanti company, President Kufuor said the Adansihene, Nana Ofori Agyeman was one of the two representatives of the government on the board.

He pledged the government's determination to restore Ghana's position as the leading cocoa producer in the world.

On the elections, President Kufuor appealed to the electorate to vote for both the presidential and parliamentary candidates of the NPP. Nana Asiama Guahyia Ababio, New Edubiasehene and acting President of the Adansi Traditional Council, appealed to the government to rehabilitate the main Anwhiankwanta-Yamoransa road.

He said the Akrokeri Training College and the Obuasi Secondary Techinical School should be upgraded under the government's policy to upgrade one secondary in each the district to improve education.

President Kufuor who also addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of Tonkoase in the Adansi South District and commended cocoa farmers for their hard work and dedication, which had resulted in the increase of the production of the crop in the country.

He said the government was not concentrating development projects in particular areas and said the nation's resources belong to all Ghanaians and they must therefore enjoyed them.

President Kufuor said the provision of development projects in all parts of the country was an ample testimony of the non-discrimination way of how the government was sharing the national cake.

He advised the people against voting on ethnic lines and said the NPP government had kept faith with the people in the area and therefore deserved their votes.

At New Edubiase, President Kufuor said the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation would soon install transmitters in the area to improve television reception, while efforts were being made to extend telephone facilities to the town.

He said the senior secondary school in the town would also be upgraded into a model school.

President Kufuor urged the people to vote massively for the NPP to enable it continue with its development agenda.

He introduced the NPP parliamentary candidate for the New Edubiase, Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, to the people.

At Akrofuom, President Kufuor directed that the contract for the reconstruction of the Obuasi-Akrofuom road be re-awarded to a more competent contractor to speed up work on the project.

He commended the people for their continued support for the NPP and advised them to vote for Mr Kwabena Appiah Pinkra, who had been elected as the parliamentary candidate for the newly created Adansi Akrofuom constituency.

President Kufuor also addressed a durbar of chiefs and people at Obuasi, where Nana Owusu Nkwantabisa, Odumasihene who stood in for the Adansihene, appealed to the government to identify other sources of employment for the people in the area after the ending of mining activities in the area.

He also appealed to the government to expedite action on the establishment of the President's Special Initiative Project in the town. 29 Oct 04
