As part of measures to ensure the quality of water and sanitation are sustained, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) and district assemblies have put in processes to ensure that contractors working on small town water projects and mechanised bore holes work in conformity and the norms of the Agency.

At the quarterly review meeting held in the Aowin District capital, Enchi, and attended by contractors working on small town water projects, the District Chief Executive for Aowin, Mr. Oscar Ofori Larbi, said water and sanitation were among the powerful drivers of human development, as they affect quality of life at all levels, including improved health and economic status.

The desired impact of improved water infrastructure, in terms of community health benefits, according to the DCE, could not be underestimated. For that matter, water and its sustainability, most especially, at the rural level, should be of great concern to all, since a healthy people constitute a healthy nation. Mr. Larbi said, the development of the country rests on the shoulders of all, and called on contractors to work within the stipulated period given them, stating, “When you fail the government, you fail the communities.”

The Regional Extension Services Specialist for the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Mr. Gaeten Kuupuolo, commended the contractors working in Amenfi Central, Amenfi West, Suaman and Aowin districts for availing themselves at the review meeting.

He, however, cautioned them to work in the conformity and standards of the agency, since additional or subsequent contracts would be awarded to particular contractors, based on the quality of previous work and seriousness, adding that “there should be value for money, since government spends so much on water and sanitation to ensuring that the health of the people was the topmost priority.”

Briefing the meeting on the progress at site and difficulties encountered, a consultant for Beza-Lel Water and Agro Services Limited, Mr. A. Ofori Amoyaw, said in order to promote hygiene in the schools and communities they were operating in, they had organised capacity building workshops for natural leaders, water and sanitation management team (WSMT) members, and all latrine artisans.

Mr. Amoyaw said in order to promote and maintain hygiene in the communities and schools they had formed school health clubs, were also promoting regular clearing and cleaning of school compounds, and education on personal hygiene. He assured the district assemblies that despite some few challenges, they would complete work on schedule.
