The Ninth National Sanitation Day Exercise, hosted in the Central Region was graced with apathy and lack of enthusiasm in Assin Fosu as few residents showed up to actively participate in the exercise.

As at 0700 hours, many shops and stores in the central business district of the town were opened for business whiles market women also arranged their foodstuffs busily selling in the market unperturbed.

Efforts by the Deputy Local Government Minister, Nii Lamptey Vanderpuye and some officials of the District Assembly to get the residents to participate in the exercise, by asking shop owners to close their shops and the blocking of some principal streets to prevent vehicular movement did not have any impact.

Some taxi drivers, passengers and market women stood unconcerned waiting for the exercise to come to end so that they could go back to their normal business.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Wives Association and staff of the Assin Fosu district Assembly de-silted gutters and cleared rubbish whiles ZOOMLION assisted by collecting the filth.

Personnel from the GNFS cleaned the storm drain, which had been turned into a dumping site by residents at the Assin Fosu new market area, whiles the Ghana Police Service personnel also collected heaps of refuse in the vicinity.

Interacting with the media later, Mr. Vanderpuye expressed his displeasure about the attitude exhibited by the residents but commended the security personnel and staff of the assembly for their good work.

He also commended the chiefs and all groups, who participated in the exercise and called on all members of parliament to support their Chief Executives to sustain the exercise.
