Appiah wins chairmanship of Ashanti Convention Party

Kumasi,Ghana, June 6,- The Ashanti Regional branch of the Convention Party (CP) on Saturday elected Mr G.A. Appiah, an Insurance Consultant, as the regional chairman of the Party, at its delegates' congress in Kumasi.

He polled 66 out of the 99 votes cast as against 29 by Mr O.T. Bonsu at the elections conducted by the Electoral Commission and supervised by the Central Committee of the Party.

Mr Kwadwo Tweneboah and Alhaji Mohammed Yakubu were elected First and Second Vice-Chairmen respectively.

The post of the regional secretary went to Mr Kwabena Anim, who polled 41 votes as against 30 polled by Mr Enoch Ampong and 23 by Mr Kofi Agyekum Yeboah.

Other officers elected were Dr James Appiah Amoateng, Treasurer, Mr F.A. Jantuah, Education Secretary, Mr Edward Osei Owusu, Regional Organiser, Madam Comfort Yeboah, Women's Organiser and Mr Bernard Spio, Youth Organiser.

Addressing the delegates, Mr Donkor Ayifli, a member of the Central Committee of the Party, commended the delegates for the peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted.

He called on those who lost to co-operate with the winners so that they could work together as one united family since that is what the Nkrumaist Family is all about.

On the impending national congress which is in doubt because of a court action, Mr Ayifli said the party's lawyers would on Monday, June seven, seek to get the matter out of court for settlement.

He assured supporters of the party that the congress would definitely be held. Mr George Aggudey, a leading member of the party, appealed to members never to allow anything to divide their ranks again but they should start building it into a formidable one in the region.

He reminded them that the NDC has started a serious campaign towards the 2000 elections and warned that if they allowed squabbles and the vying for positions to divide them, the party could not achieve its objective to unseat the NDC.

The newly elected chairman promised openadministration, assuring members that he would serve the rank and file of the party and not lord it over them.

Mr Appiah said his major task would be to tour all the constituencies to meet members and supporters to plan strategies for the 2000 elections.
