Archbishop Andoh urges Catholics to work harder for present/future

Accra, June 27, GNA -- The Most Reverend Dominic Kodwo Andoh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra on Saturday called on Catholics to continue contributing positively towards the socio-economic development of the country to benefit present and future generations. He stressed the need for members of the Church to strive hard to assist one another, both spiritually and physically in order to create positive change in society.

Most Rev. Andoh was speaking at a durbar held by the Saint Kizito Church at Nima in Accra in his honour to mark his 75th birthday anniversary. The Church also dedicated a 1.8 billion cedi parish hall to the Archbishop for his immense contribution towards the growth of the Church.

The Parish Hall was started by Rev. Father Alphonse Merten, a German missionary priest in 1970 and initially, it was known as the "OAU Parish" and later changed to the "United Nations Parish in view of the multinational nature of the parishioners."

He said the best legacy that Catholics can leave for posterity is to be dedicated and forward looking and work hard to assist people, especially the needy to enable them to live a comfortable life. The Archbishop commended the congregation for putting up an ultra modern parish hall, saying that in spite of hard times they have shown generosity to God and mankind and prayed that they continue with this good work.

He said the parish needs commendation as it has thrived in the area, in the face of challenges and urged the congregation to continue with their spiritual zeal to bring a change in the society. Mr Dan Acheampong, chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council said the hall would be put as the disposal of the entire community to be sued for social and other activities to promote the spiritual and physical growth of the area.

He gave the assurance that the Church, "is set to change all that is negative about Nima as we are determined to positively influence the future of this community with the help of God," saying that the hall is the beginning of greater things to come. Mr Acheampong said the parish would ensure that people of all backgrounds experience the joy that can be found in the House of the Lord.
