Deputy Majority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah
The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed concerns over a strange fish disease wreaking havoc at Kamgbunli, a fishing community in the Western Region.
Sharing his thoughts in a post on his X page, on Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Member of Parliament of Ellembele emphasised the urgent need for swift action to address the crisis.
"I am deeply troubled by the alarming reports emerging from Kamgbunli, a town in my beloved Ellembele constituency, where a mysterious fish disease is wreaking havoc on the livelihoods of our fishermen and posing a significant threat to the health of our community.
"The situation in Kamgbunli is dire: fish caught in the Ebi River are exhibiting severe skin infections, making them unsuitable for sale or consumption.
Additionally, the river has taken on a noxious odor and an unsettling color, heightening concerns about potential health hazards for our residents", he narrated.
While commending the temporary ban on fishing activities in the affected rivers as a necessary precaution, Armah-Kofi Buah stressed the importance of identifying the source of the contamination.
He also urged immediate action from the relevant authorities.
"I urgently implore the Western Regional Fisheries Commission to promptly gather samples from the impacted fish and the river. Any delay in taking these crucial steps only prolongs the suffering of the Kamgbunli community," he noted.
He further called on key governmental bodies to intervene.
"I call upon the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and other pertinent agencies to collaborate and offer the requisite support to investigate and address this pressing crisis," he urged.
Over the past month, fishermen in the area have reported a worrying trend as fish caught in the Ebi River having strange skin, red, swollen lesions that escalate into gaping wounds.
