Armed Robbers Gun Down "Turncoat"

Thu, 6 Feb 2003 Source: Times

A gang of five suspected armed robbers on Tuesday evening brutally murdered their former colleague, known only as Mufu at Flamingo near Dansoman in Accra. The reason? They suspected that their colleague, an ex-convict aged about 45, who had turned over a new leaf, was leaking information about their activities to the police.

In a typical Hollywood fashion, the robbers repeatedly shot the deceased in the full glare of astonished witnesses until he died. ''Gangster killing,'' was how the police described the incident which occurred at 8pm.

According to a witness, a passer-by Daniel Amenu was hit by a stray bullet during the shooting spree and he is on admission at the hospital.

He is reported to be in critical condition. The robbers, using an unregistered ash grey Opel Vectra, attacked Mufu as he was buying fried yam from wayside seller at Flamingo.

According to an eyewitness, when the vehicle halted near the deceased who was in the company of a lady, the passenger in the front seat shouted ''fire!'' At the command, one of the robbers shot Mufu in the back with what the police believe was a pump action gun.

''Mufu fell on the ground and all the robbers got down from car and repeatedly shot him until he died. Having satisfied themselves that the ''traitor'' was dead, they jumped unto the vehicle and sped away.

Mufu was discharged from prison only last year and decided to distance himself from the group and the occupation that sent him to jail.
