Kumasi, Sept 20, GNA- The joint Police-Military Team at dawn on Saturday engaged in a fierce gun battle with a five-member armed robbery gang in Kumasi, killing one member of the gang identified only as Ibrahim and capturing another.

The remaining three, suspected to have suffered gun shots however, managed to escape into a bush behind the Manhyia police station and an intensive search has been mounted to apprehend them.

The team recovered from the gang, a Mazda pick-up, which they had seized from its owner, Mr Kofi Owusu at Kwadaso.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ofosu-Mensah Gyeabour, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, told a press briefing that at about 0200 hours on Saturday, the robbers attacked the residence of Mr Owusu and took away his pick up.

They then drove to Asafo where they robbed passengers who had arrived on an STC bus and from there continued to the Race Course and once again robbed people of various sums of money. ACP Gyeabour said the Police Information Room received a report about their operation and quickly dispatched a patrol team to arrest them.

The team first spotted the gang at Kaase, one of the suburbs of Kumasi but they slipped away. They were given a hot chase and the team finally caught up with them near the residence of Nana Akwasi Agyeman, former Mayor of Kumasi where they engaged them in a shoot out. The Regional Police Commander invited all those who fell victim to the robbery by the gang to make a report to the police.

ACP Gyeabour said they would wage total war against criminals in the society, adding that, day and night patrols are being intensified.
