The Accra Regional Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of Lance Corporal George Korankye, a policeman of the Tesano Divisional Police Station.

A statement issued in Accra on Thursday and copied to Ghana News Agency said the policeman was hit by a bullet when his patrol team engaged a squad of suspected armed robbers in exchange of fire at about 0245 hours morning at West Loop Tesano.

It said the incident occurred when the suspects, who were attempting to break into a house at East Loop Tesano bolted on their motor bikes upon seeing the police patrol team.

The statement said the police patrol team gave them a chase leading to exchange of gunfire and the subsequent death of the Lance Corporal George Korankye.

“It is strongly believed that some of the robbers were hit by a bullet and could be seeking medical attention in some health facilities in Accra, and its environs”.

The statement appealed to medical practitioners to be mindful and look out for persons with gunshot wounds, who would report for treatment at their facilities.
