THE timely intervention of the Kumasi Buffalo Police patrol team on Tuesday night prevented six armed robbers from bolting with a 240-Mercedes Benz saloon car they snatched from the Chief of Eguaful, Nana Osei Banoh, at gun point at Ejisu in Ashanti.
Despite the police intervention, the gang managed to run away with an amount of ?6.2 million belonging to the chief and his sister, Janet Serwaa, who was also in the car. The robbers also escaped with their luggage that contained clothes and other personal belongings.
The police have intensified investigations to arrest the robbers. Constable Gideon Boateng of the Police Public Relations Unit, said in an interview that at about 12 mid-night on Tuesday, Nana Banoh was returning from Accra with his sister and decided to stop at Ejisu to discuss some issues with a friend at the Bon Apetit Hotel. He said as the chief was entering the hotel, six men, who were all armed with shot guns and a cutlass blocked the entrance and directed him to drive to a shop belonging to some Malians.
According to Constable Boateng, the robbers used the butt of their guns to hit Mr. Banoh to intimidate him into submission. The Chief, who is also the Krontihene of Kokofu, obliged and on reaching the shop the robbers collected an amount of ?6.2 million and luggage belonging to him and his sister, locked them in the shop and bolted with the car, with registration number, GR 4911N. Boateng revealed that an hour later, a taxi driver, Osei Kwabena, hinted the police about the direction of the Benz car, and they pursued it. He said that the robbers had earlier attempted to snatch the taxi, with registration number, AS 8243 Q, from the driver, but he managed to elude them.
Constable Boateng said that in an attempt to escape from the police, the robbers ran into a gutter, near the Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School at Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi, smashing the car’s headlight and the bonnet in the process. Sensing danger, the robbers bolted, leaving behind the car. He said the car has been towed to the Police Headquarters in Kumasi.
