Armed robbery cases drop in Legon

Accra, Sept. 27, GNA - The Legon District Police Command, on Monday disclosed that armed robbery cases, which stood at 59 from January- September 2009, had dropped to 26 during the period under review. Assistant Superintendent of Police Matthew Teye Tetteh, who made this known during a crime awareness forum organised by his outfit for taxi and trotro (mini-bus) drivers, attributed the downward trend to the vigilance of the Police and Military patrols.

He said the district recorded 166 motor accidents involving 255 vehicles and 15 motorbikes, leading to three injuries and three deaths last year.

This year, the area had listed 118 cases of accidents involving 189 vehicles and 12 motorbikes, injuring seven people and claiming six lives. ASP Tetteh noted that it is the responsibility of the public to support the police to curb crime by volunteering information to flush out criminals from their hideouts. Talking on safety measures, he reminded house owners to reinforce their windows and doors with burglar proof materials to help prevent crime.

ASP Tetteh cautioned the public to be wary of people who ride motorbikes without registration numbers, explaining that it is the modus operandi of some armed robbers.

He asked taxi drivers to be vigilant in the night and report to the police when they sense danger.

The commander also warned the drivers not to do business around secluded areas without light.

ASP Tetteh advised owners of private vehicles not to expose personal belongings such as hand bags and computer laptops, since it attract thieves.

He admonished the public to call emergency police numbers- 18555 for all telephone network and 0302-773906/787373 when they are in distress.
